Funny Face

(ALL FOREVER21 (old), HAT URBAN OUTFITTERS)

Here I am, channeling Audrey Hepburn in some slim black pants and dorsay flats. Anyone who knows me knows I love Audrey Hepburn. My absolute favorite movie in the world is Breakfast at Tiffany’s and not because it opens with the famous black Givenchy dress and pearls; because everyone knows the coffee, donut and that longingly sideways glare into Tiffany’s is really what makes the scene. The tone of the film is just simple and it really captures a different time in cinema; it makes me nostalgic for those early years of Hollywood glamour where everything was shiny and new. I have endless admiration for the creativity in what it took to bring Breakfast to the big screen, from the choice in wardrobe, to the casting, to the revisions in the script based on the novel; it was creativity in its purest.

My other favorite Audrey Hepburn movies are Roman Holiday, How to Steal a Million, Two for the Road and Funny Face.

I bet you think this post is about my newfound guitar skills...
or this awesomely placed water bottle...

but this post is about how very little summer clothes I own and it may or may not having everything to do with the ever-growing spread of my hips or me spending the majority of my time at work? Either way I can’t seem to commit to summer-wear and my best bet, because I’m almost always running late, is a dress. Yeah, I know it’s quite lazy but you have to admit it dresses/rompers/overalls are a one and done kind of awesome.

When I am short on time throwing on a dress is a quick fix that allows me extra styling/makeup time. I wore this dress to meet my boyfriend for lunch and he thought I looked so tomboy cute it didn’t even bother him that I was late. Hence the dress serves as a timesaver and a distraction, which is a win/win situation. During the workweek when getting out the bed early is the most difficult, I opt for printed dresses in breathable fabrics. Once the weekend rolls around I put on a floral sundress or a body-con maxi dress. Sometimes I have a vision I feel compelled to bring to life and sometimes, usually after three wardrobe changes, my boyfriend is just like “just put something on”.

(URBAN OUTFITTERS DRESS, NIKE AIR MAX 90)

I have been wearing these air max 90's a lot lately but that's probably going to change because I just snag a cool pair of Diesel trainners and they are so euro-cool, I CAN'T EVEN.

(ZARA TOP, BANANA REPUBLIC SHORTS, SHOES VIA PIPERLIME)
The list of things on my to-do list is overwhelmingly annoying. Don’t get me wrong I love a good to-do list, as of late my favorites are “black/maroon fall pieces to buy” and “bags to invest in”. I know, not quite traditional but just as essential.

To-do lists for me are a high and low and can range anywhere from “what I need ‘to-do’ is buy a Kelly green oversize sweater” to “what I don’t want to spend my money on, but I have to-do what I gotta do”. I know it may seem ridiculous to some but I’m sure there are girls out there just like me who fantasize about how they are going to take this fall by storm. Girls, who eloquently fold page corners in September issued magazines, I’m talking to you! My to-do list is not realistic, I’m aware; it’s 90% wish-list but it keeps me sane. You know what doesn't keep me sane? All the things I actually need.

There is no thrill in owing my GYN $35 for a follow-up that didn't even last fifteen minutes, seriously my GYN is a dude with tattooed eyeliner-I am so done with him…Not that tattooed eyeliner on dudes is unacceptable but when you’re charging me, full price at that, for eight minutes of your time?! Or how about that one time I thought that the best thing for Tiffany was natural looking fillings and now I’m $80 indebted to my dentist. I know it is not as absurd as Dr. Eyeliner but can I do something for myself for once without having to pay for it?

This has served as a wake-up call; I have to get my hypochondria under control.

Keep The Receipt

There’s this funny idea that all NYC bloggers are living the sex and the city life and I am sure there are a few…

( GAP JACKET, AA CROP TOP, MOSSIMO PENCIL SKIRT, AIR MAX 90)

I am not living the Sex and The City life; I am actually living in the Bronx and aside from my hour commute to work in midtown and to my sons’ school in Soho, I am quite alright with this borough. I was born here, Thanksgiving 1988 my mom gave birth to me in our apartment on Courtland Avenue. I have only resided in the Bronx so this is will always simply be home to me. I think the Bronx gets a bad rap because it is the only borough that has not jumped on the gentrification train... I am not going to discuss gentrification but I will say I agree with a lot of what Spike Lee has to say.

There's something refreshing and nostalgic to know that all these changes are taking place around New York but the Bronx is still the Bronx: still blaring Big Pun and Mary J Blige hits at summer block parties, still chaotic on the 4 or the D train the day of a Yankee game, still making authentic Italian food in the original Little Italy.

Sometimes I long for healthy food alternatives better shopping, maybe a Wholefoods or Trader Joes, but hey what are you going to do? I mean there’s a Starbucks 800 feet from my house, that may seem little but trust me it is big.

Stuck on the realness

(KURT GEIGER FLATS, H & M SHIRTDRESS, CASIO WATCH, LOUIS VUITTON CANVAS SHADES)

My class system on flats are characterized on how androgynous they are; the more masculine, the better the shoe. As much as I love flats and I really do, (I even went through this ballerina flat stage in high school) they just do not love my wide feet. Occasionally I'll just wear them anyway but if the material is not durable (ie: leather and not that luxury buttery soft kind) they give out and it just looks bad. I took some much needed time off of blogging. I am a firm believer in doing what makes you happy. I realized just how happy blogging makes me during the early stages of reconstructing Tiff James Deen into The Vague Calling. Sometimes I fall into the habit of dwelling on things that are not going my way or just focusing on irrelevant things altogether, when I could be focusing on my growth. When I am in blogging mode I have this tunnel vision to create and expand my mind without any limitations and distractions. I renamed my blog because Tiff James Deen was generating a lot of porny email spam lol. Also, when I named my blog Tiff James Deen there was not really too much thought behind it, it was impulsive. Over the course of the last year I had time to think about what I wanted to blog about, what I wanted from blogging, how much I've grown and all of my recent experiences and the new people in my life. I put all my ideas down on paper and suddenly it did not feel so impulsive anymore and so The Vague Calling came along… With all the idea’s I had simmering for months now I did not feel like I could categorize myself as just a fashion blogger because that’s not all I plan on doing here. I am going to do it all, because that is what makes me the happiest, and if the people like it, they like it and if they don’t, that’s fine too.

(Calvin Klein dress, BCBG shoes, Loft earrings)

Snapped these pics while celebrating for my twenty-fourth birthday; which was in November! I don't know why I'm finally posting them - well I know why, because I kind of forgot about them. This dress, believe it or not, was a piece my mother let me borrow. A dress she has probably owned for over two years, was not planning to wear; compulsive pointless shopping behavior is hereditary you see..

She's never getting this dress back, it's plunging neckline is totally inappropriate for her; it was a bit risque for me! Translation: the boyfriend kept saying "you're annoying" which means "you look really good" ha ha. Allegedly my "ability to find the silly in the serious will take me far". Now I don't think that means I have a future as a stand up comedian, but those that enjoy my humor absolutely love me for having the ability to make them laugh to tears, challenge them with wit and make animals sounds during awkward silences.
