Simple things

Tuesday, October 14, 2014

(EXPRESS top, JOE FRESH BF jeans, ZARA bag, RAMPAGE shoes)

Simplicity is key: it is in the clothing I buy, when I dress for comfort above all else.  It is in the minimal jewelry I own, even my collection of chunky gold hooped earrings. It is in my preference when cooking, simple meals make the best leftovers. As I age I am learning more about myself and I have come to understand that despite the amount of shoes I own and my ever growing makeup collection I am not the least bit as  high maintenance as I should be. I do not ask for much, simple things and small gestures keep me happy. There is nothing that makes my day more than someone doing something kind and unexpected because it kind of sets off a sensor in my brain and when the timing is right I return that same gesture and keep that vibe going.

Unbothered

Tuesday, September 23, 2014

Strange enough these are all pieces I have worked into my work-wear and this is something I wore on a weekend. I have gained some weight in the hip region so I haven't been thrilled about wearing denim, these pants are from Joe Fresh which have been a favorite to go place for me for workwear. They are called the 'Audrey', they have the right amount of spandex and they are cut nice and skinny; just waiting for them to come back in season (hint hint Joe Fresh).

Lately I've been spending money on clothing, either on new clothing or alterations at the tailor. I am obsessed with the tailor right now, I can't believe I have gone this far in life without understanding the importance of something being sculpted to my body. I am also opting for spending more for better materials. With having more luxurious pieces I learned the effect of having things dry cleaned and how it reserves the garment and also with my non luxurious pieces I've learned how to handle them with care to extend their life span.

I have been gravitating towards a lot of black, deep purples, dark florals, neutrals like camel, eggshell and mauve, although I am still on the prowl for hunter green and brown garments.  Since the season changed brighter hues are on sale and so I shop ahead and I've purchased pieces in baby pink and fuchsia. I think pops of color during the fall and winter are refreshing and buying things on sale for next spring and summer is wallet friendly.

There's this thing about New Yorker's and black and I have never really participated in that, although I have grown to appreciate a LBD and all of it's versatilities. I also read somewhere that when you find something that fits well, you should buy it in multiple colors. So to me, that LBD can easily be a LRD, or a LWD. I think the fit of a dress is more important than what color it is.

Usually I tend to feel some sort guilt purchasing clothing but it is mainly work clothes so it qualifies as a necessity, give or take a new pair of Koral jeans that have changed my life...

Keep it casual

(TAHARI TEE, H&M SHORTS & VEST, ZARA BAG, JOE FRESH SHOES)

Am I doing it? Am I dressing like a normal person? If you google Normcore your search results may point you in several directions leaving you more confused than ever, like I and so many others are. I would like to understand how dressing normal is a thing? How is it a trend when normal varies from one person to another? This is why, in some ways, I hate the industry; I can’t help but feel like the fashion world stifles creativity. We are told what’s in, what’s out and even someone with no interest in fashion whatsoever gets labeled: Normcore, hipster, etc. Why can’t we just be, without it turning into a thing that’s in or out?

The Soloist

I bet you think this post is about my newfound guitar skills...
or this awesomely placed water bottle...

but this post is about how very little summer clothes I own and it may or may not having everything to do with the ever-growing spread of my hips or me spending the majority of my time at work? Either way I can’t seem to commit to summer-wear and my best bet, because I’m almost always running late, is a dress. Yeah, I know it’s quite lazy but you have to admit it dresses/rompers/overalls are a one and done kind of awesome.

When I am short on time throwing on a dress is a quick fix that allows me extra styling/makeup time. I wore this dress to meet my boyfriend for lunch and he thought I looked so tomboy cute it didn’t even bother him that I was late. Hence the dress serves as a timesaver and a distraction, which is a win/win situation. During the workweek when getting out the bed early is the most difficult, I opt for printed dresses in breathable fabrics. Once the weekend rolls around I put on a floral sundress or a body-con maxi dress. Sometimes I have a vision I feel compelled to bring to life and sometimes, usually after three wardrobe changes, my boyfriend is just like “just put something on”.

(URBAN OUTFITTERS DRESS, NIKE AIR MAX 90)

I have been wearing these air max 90's a lot lately but that's probably going to change because I just snag a cool pair of Diesel trainners and they are so euro-cool, I CAN'T EVEN.

(ZARA TOP, BANANA REPUBLIC SHORTS, SHOES VIA PIPERLIME)
The list of things on my to-do list is overwhelmingly annoying. Don’t get me wrong I love a good to-do list, as of late my favorites are “black/maroon fall pieces to buy” and “bags to invest in”. I know, not quite traditional but just as essential.

To-do lists for me are a high and low and can range anywhere from “what I need ‘to-do’ is buy a Kelly green oversize sweater” to “what I don’t want to spend my money on, but I have to-do what I gotta do”. I know it may seem ridiculous to some but I’m sure there are girls out there just like me who fantasize about how they are going to take this fall by storm. Girls, who eloquently fold page corners in September issued magazines, I’m talking to you! My to-do list is not realistic, I’m aware; it’s 90% wish-list but it keeps me sane. You know what doesn't keep me sane? All the things I actually need.

There is no thrill in owing my GYN $35 for a follow-up that didn't even last fifteen minutes, seriously my GYN is a dude with tattooed eyeliner-I am so done with him…Not that tattooed eyeliner on dudes is unacceptable but when you’re charging me, full price at that, for eight minutes of your time?! Or how about that one time I thought that the best thing for Tiffany was natural looking fillings and now I’m $80 indebted to my dentist. I know it is not as absurd as Dr. Eyeliner but can I do something for myself for once without having to pay for it?

This has served as a wake-up call; I have to get my hypochondria under control.

(URBAN OUTFITTERS DRESS, JESSICA SIMPSON 'DANY' PLATFORMS, CHRISTIAN DIOR SUNGLASSES)
Once upon a time the fashion gods deemed platforms no longer “in” and just like that we were wearing flatforms/sneakers/ballet flats/kitten-heels/non-platform stilettos (which are sexy on the foot but not so sexy on the arch after anything longer than an hour). I am not giving up my Dany Platforms because they are suddenly not “in”. Jessica Simpson created a precious jewel of a shoe, a shoe that tells a tale of great sale conquer-ship and also holds sentimental value. Before I began blogging I was obsessed with Chictopia, Bloglovin and the Satorialist. The Dany’ platform had a huge following most likely due to Rumi Neely and I had to have them. For me, the Dany’ platform represents that peak in my life where the inspiration from blogging was at its highest. For me blogging was inspiring because these girls had style and put things together in a way that did more for me than any celebrity. Celebrities have stylists; they have little to nothing whatsoever to do with what they wear. Today, I am not too inspired by bloggers, fashion wise. I respect them as business women and I have a great level of admiration for the photography but for me there are too many sponsored posts and free clothes. Sponsored posts and free clothes is awesome, even more so when it is cohesive to your style, but when you try to pass off orthopedic shoes as “my current faves” I have to call bullshit. I understand that brands have to make money and what better way to appeal to young girls than a popular fashion blogger? And with fashion bloggers being so easily impressionable with the temptation of being featured/reblogged/liked/followed and (gasps) paid I can imagine it being oh too easy. Compromising my style and creativity just is not worth it, I know my worth and I know that I am not motivated by money or anyone’s approval.

(ZARA TOP, H&M SKIRT, STEVE MADDEN PLATFORMS, ELIZABETH & JAMES 'CRESCENT' SUNGLASSES)

Summers in New York always seem to travel at the speed of light. We endured a polar vortex of a winter with spring being…well I do not remember spring and just the other day we had that fall sweater weather. It's crazy how it can go from steamy hot to cool and a little breezy. I know I am just getting back into the groove of blogging but the idea of freezing my ass off in ten degree weather is not something I am anticipating. Perhaps during the winter I’ll do more cooking/food posts :)

Keep The Receipt

There’s this funny idea that all NYC bloggers are living the sex and the city life and I am sure there are a few…

( GAP JACKET, AA CROP TOP, MOSSIMO PENCIL SKIRT, AIR MAX 90)

I am not living the Sex and The City life; I am actually living in the Bronx and aside from my hour commute to work in midtown and to my sons’ school in Soho, I am quite alright with this borough. I was born here, Thanksgiving 1988 my mom gave birth to me in our apartment on Courtland Avenue. I have only resided in the Bronx so this is will always simply be home to me. I think the Bronx gets a bad rap because it is the only borough that has not jumped on the gentrification train... I am not going to discuss gentrification but I will say I agree with a lot of what Spike Lee has to say.

There's something refreshing and nostalgic to know that all these changes are taking place around New York but the Bronx is still the Bronx: still blaring Big Pun and Mary J Blige hits at summer block parties, still chaotic on the 4 or the D train the day of a Yankee game, still making authentic Italian food in the original Little Italy.

Sometimes I long for healthy food alternatives better shopping, maybe a Wholefoods or Trader Joes, but hey what are you going to do? I mean there’s a Starbucks 800 feet from my house, that may seem little but trust me it is big.
